Ssi For Children

One of the hallmarks of a democratic country is its ability to look after its citizens. While it affords the vote to its population, has separation of powers and limits it by the presence of a constitution, a democratic government cannot be complete without looking after the welfare of its citizens. This is what separates it from authoritarian or communist states, the fact that the conditions or quality of lives of its populace are better and more taken cared of as opposed to those who are not so free.

This is why democratic governments like the United States have instituted several programs to look into the different aspects of its citizens like health, education, housing, employment and a lot more. One of the instituted programs is the Supplemental security income which aims to provide for those less fortunate individuals specifically those aged 65 and above, visually impaired or differently-abled. The US treasury funds the program as it is stipulated under the Social Security Act that the state must provide for its citizens who are less well-off. But this magnificent program is not only limited to the elderly population but also has provisions for disabled kids. The state also looks into the welfare of its younger citizens as they will be the inheritors of the state, regardless of whether they are physically fit or differently-abled. Certainly, the United States government doesn't discriminate based on physical capability. This is why it has also instituted a supplemental security income or SSI for children.

The SSI for children applies to those who are under 18 or under 22 years of age and are currently in school. Those who want to avail of the benefits must qualify the conditions set by the social security disability board. The income of the parents must be low enough to qualify for the SSI for children program of the state. The state determines how one can fit under the program. The child must not be doing any substantial work and his or her condition must have been existing before age 22 and must be one of the listed impairments set by the board. It must be grave enough that it impedes upon the other capacities of the kid. The SSI for children gives every eligible child almost $484 per month in assistance. These kids can also be eligible for Medicaid under the SSI for children program. It is certainly a great help for parents who are not earning enough for their family, let alone fend for a disabled kid.

Taking care of children with disabilities can be very expensive so it is in the ambit of the state to make sure that these families are granted all the help they need. The SSI for children is not a perfect program and it definitely has a lot of nitty-gritty aspects that parents must overcome before they can be qualified; however, it is a good program notwithstanding the bureaucracy involved. Parents interested in availing of the SSI for children program must secure all the requirements needed, including doctor's and school records just to successfully establish the child's impairment. So far, the SSI for children program has had around 1,227,732 beneficiaries.
